The gender of people who answered my questionnaire were 75% female, this will help me to gain an insight into the female interests of a magazine; this is important if I am to create an indie music magazine as this is more of a male dominated industry and so gaining knowledge of female interests will allow me to target both males and females.
62.5% of people who answered my questionnaire were aged 16-18, and 37.5% fell into the 18-22 age bracket; the information provided by people aged between 16-22 will allow me to cater to the needs of this demographic who are likely to be my target audience.
50% of respondants answered that they usually buy magazines monthly, compared to 12.5% of respondants who said they buy magazines weekly. Despite the popularity of a magazine released monthly, my competitors in the market will be magazines such as NME who release their magazines weekly and so my magazine will need to be released weekly in order to compete with this.
The £2-£3 price bracket was most popular with 62.5% of respondants saying they would pay between £2-£3 for a magazine and so my magazine's cost will be somewhere within this price bracket. My magazine will probably cost around £2.30 as this is the price of my magazines competitors in the market, such as NME and Kerrang!
I had already decided that my product was going to be a music magazine and so 100% of respondants voted for a music magazine and 87.5% of respondants said they would prefer a magazine of the indie rock genre and so that is the genre I will use.
When asked what features would appeal to them in a music magazine and given 3 choices, 87.5% voted for exclusive interviews with band members, 75% voted for gig and festival updates and 62.5% chose album reviews and so these will be main features of my magazine.
With regards to colour scheme, 75% of respondants chose a red, white and black colour scheme. 12.5% answered other than any options they were given and the other 12.5% chose blue, red and white. I have decided to go with the majority vote of red, white and black because alongside its popularity it follows the codes and conventions of an indie rock magazines colour scheme and so will be more convincing as a product.
I also gave examples of around 20 bands and required respondants picked around 4 that they would want to read about in a music magazine, 62.5% said The Black Keys, 50% said The Kooks, 50% said MGMT, 37.5% said Razorlight and 25% said Royal Blood. These were the most popular options and so I will make sure to include these bands predominantly in my magazine.
The final question I asked was what other magazines do you currently read or would you choose to read, 62.5% answered MOJO and 50% answered NME and so these will be the two magazines I will base my magazine around and use inspiration from. Despite it being less voted for, I am going to use NME as my main inspiration for my own magazine production as I feel this is a more established and well-known magazine to base mine upon and is also one that I have more knowledge on and feel this will enable me to create an overall more successful product, however, I will adapt elements of both magazines into my own product.
