Orange connotes joy, enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, strength, endurance and stimulation. Orange also has a high visibility and can be used to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of the page. Orange is also a highly accepted colour with a young/teen audience and so fits with the audience of this magazine. The use of orange on this page draws attention to key bits of information and also suggests the success of the band but their lack of stimulation to get back together after their split.  It also implies that they have endured a lot during their career and have had a strong and successful career. White connotes safety, purity, and cleanliness – on this page the use of white connotes the fresh and new path that the members of Oasis are going to go on after their split and also suggests the revelation that they will not be getting back together is breaking news. The white also stands out and contrasts with the other colours on the page. Black is mainly used on the font – it suggests seriousness and makes the text look bold, black is also a visible colour which will make the text easy to read and follow.

Font

Most of the writing is part of the article and is in quite a small font. The ‘T’ at the beginning of the article is significantly bigger than the other font on the page and has been capitalized and is bold – this is similar to the style of font in a newspaper. This suggests that the article is as serious and trustworthy as a newspaper – it also appeals to a more mature and advanced audience as these are the sorts of people who would read a newspaper. It also draws attention to where the beginning of the article is and so makes the article easy to follow. The simple sentence quotation on the left hand side of the page is the biggest piece of font on this spread; it is written in bold capitals which makes it the first thing you see on the page and the font colours are white and orange which contrasts with the dark colours of the background and further draws attention to the writing. The colour scheme is reversed on the right hand side page as white is the colour of the background and black is the colour of the font – this makes a distinction between the two pages as one is an image and one is writing but also links the two as the image is mainly of black and dark colours and so the font being black makes a link between the image and the article. The end quotation mark overlaps onto the right page and so links the quotation with the text.

Mise-en-scene

The main image is on the left hand side of the page and the writing/article is on the right hand side of the page; this positioning is the opposite of the way we read images and writing. This could have been done to suggest how Oasis do things differently and do not follow the norms and what everyone else does; it could also be because all parts of the article are equally interesting and they don’t want to draw attention to specific things. The main image is of the band Oasis, it is a medium shot and they are all making direct address which will grab the reader’s attention and make it seem like they are being directly spoken to; this will make the reader trust what the article says more as it seems as though Oasis are telling them the information directly. The direct address also suggests that the band members have nothing to hide and that all will be revealed in this article – this will also make the reader interested in what the article has to say. The camera angle is straight on which makes the reader feel equal to the band members and this will also build trust in the article as the reader will feel equal to Oasis and it makes the article seem more like a conversation. This image is anchored by a statement made by a member of Oasis; this has been written in white to suggest that this statement is fresh and new and hasn’t been heard before. ‘ANOTHER OASIS’ has been written in orange, the use of orange connotes strength, endurance and determination; it could imply that the statement that has been made is a strong one and may be shocking but also highlights the struggle that Oasis has had to endure and by putting their band name in orange it shows who the article is about and highlights their success. On the right hand side the page has been split into 3 columns and the page has been split in half by an orange banner. The sectioning of the page into 3 columns makes the layout easy to follow and makes the page look neat; splitting the page in half has had a similar effect. Most of the font on this page is small as the article is packed full of information – the orange banner splitting the page up makes it look more exciting and also attracts your eye to the page rather than only attracting your eye to the main image to show that image and writing are equally as interesting.

Colours

Orange connotes enthusiasm, happiness, creativity, determination, success, strength, endurance and stimulation. Orange has a high visibility and is used to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of the page. Orange is also a highly accepted colour with a young/teen audience and so fits with the audience of this magazine. The use of orange implies that the article is going to be about something positive and suggests it is going to be about a successful and strong artist/group. Orange is also quite an unusual and rare colour and so the use of it in this suggests that the articles topic is unusual and unique; the merging of two different artists. The use of white connotes fresh, new, cleanliness and is a colour often associated with safety and trust. The white also contrasts well with the other darker colours on the page and so stands out. This use of white suggests that the feature is going to be about fresh and new artists; white is often associated with positivity and so this suggests that the article is going to be about something positive or an achievement of some sort. Black connotes mystery, seriousness, strength, masculinity and is bold. The use of black suggests that the artists featured in the article are strong, masculine, bold and serious.

Font

Most of the writing on this spread is in capital letters and is bold which makes it stand out and catches the eye of the reader as being something of importance on the page. The ‘I’ at the beginning of the article is in capitals and is bold which is similar to how the beginning of an article would start in a newspaper; this suggests that the article is aimed at a more advanced and intelligent audience and also gives the article seriousness. In addition, it draws attention to where the beginning of the article is and makes the layout easy to follow. The main piece of font is the title of the article which is a minor sentence – this sort of sentence is often used to declare something and also seems like it is being directly spoken to you. Most of the writing is in white which stands out against the dark background and as white is a colour associated with safety gives the articles content trust by the readers.

Mise-en-scene

There are 2 main images; one of Miles Kane and one of Alex Turner. They are on either end of the page and quite separated from each other – this suggests they are different/separate artists. Alex Turner (right) is looking away (indirect address) and has folded arms and quite closed body language; this suggests he is not a very open person and entices the reader to read the article to see what he is hiding and to find out more about him. Miles Kane (left) is looking directly at you (direct address) and has quite open body language as his arms are behind his back; this suggests to the reader he is a more open person and will open up in the article and therefore make them interested in reading it. His direct address draws attention to him and grabs the reader’s eye as it seems like they are being directly spoken to. The difference in posture and body language of the 2 artists makes a distinction between them and shows they come from different backgrounds – the positioning of the article in the middle of them links them. The title of the article reads ‘BEST OF BOTH WORLDS’ the font starts off orange and gradually goes into white; the merging of the two colours again represents the 2 different artists and their different attributes. The orange connotes strength, enthusiasm, creativity and success – it being placed on the left side of the page where the image of Miles Kane is suggests that as an artist he is successful, strong, enthusiastic and creative. The white connotes new, fresh, positivity and coolness – it being placed on the right side of the page where Alex Turner is suggests that he is all of these things and the merging of these 2 colours in the middle of the page demonstrates the merging of their attributes as they come together as one artist. The use of ‘BEST OF BOTH WORLDS’ also implies that the artists are different but the use of the superlative ‘best’ suggests that they are going to be really good together and this will excite the reader. The positioning of the article in the middle of the page links the two artists together and its positioning in the centre suggests it is a crucial part in the feature, it’s positioning in the centre of the page also makes the layout of the page easy to follow and clear.

Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

Colours

Blue connotes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, masculinity, truth, it is associated with tranquillity and calmness. In this article, the blue represents masculinity as the article is about a male artist; it also connotes confience which we can see in Noels body laguage. Blue also has heavenly connotations which combined with the white could suggest that Noel is wise, faithful, pure and perhaps 'Godly'. White connotes safety, purity, and cleanliness – on this page the use of white connotes how Noel Gallagher is starting a new path after the Oasis split and also suggests the revelation that they will not be getting back together is breaking news. The white also stands out and contrasts with the other colours on the page.  Black is mainly used on the font for the article – it suggests seriousness and makes the text look bold, black is also a visible colour which will make the text easy to read and follow. Black also connotes mystery, the text being written in black suggests that a mystery or something unkown is going to be revealed about the artist.

Font

The font is positioned on the right hand side of the page and is a serif font. Most of the font is in black which suggests seriousness and makes it bold on the page. Noel Gallagher’s name and the word ‘CHIEF’ are the only words written in capital letters which draws attention to them and suggests their importance. The use of the serif font makes the article seem more 'old school' - this links with how Noel Gallagher is quite an old artist and is more well known for his past membership in the band Oasis, it also links with his alternative style and persona and individuality. The main piece of font is 'Noel Gallagher' this gives an obvious indication of who the article is about and it being written in white links with the whiter background behind Noel and so anchors the image.

Mise-en-scene

The image of Noel Gallagher has been positioned on the left side of the page and the writing for the article on the right. This is the opposite to the way you read writing and images as you read writing from left to right and images from right to left. This positioning could have been used so as not to draw attention to any aspect of the article as it all has equal weighting and could also suggest that the article is about someone who does not follow the ‘rules’ and what is expected of them. The image of Noel Gallagher is a medium shot and he is not looking at the camera (indirect address) which makes him seem mysterious as you cannot see all of him and this intrigues the reader to read the article to find out more about Noel. He is wearing a white shirt and brown leather jacket – casual clothing. His dark clothing makes him look a bit rough and like a gangster, someone you wouldn’t mess with and also makes him seem masculine (this also links with the connotations of the dark blue colour used).  Most of his outfit is quite dark which again emphasis his mysteriousness, makes him bold on the page against the lighter background and links him with the text as the font is in black. The lighting around Noel Gallagher is quite low and glows around him – it looks a bit like a halo suggesting Noel is like an angel/God. This also makes Noel look important and superior, in addition, Noel is looking down which also gives the impression that he is superior and important. ‘The Chief’ written under Noel Gallagher’s name also supports the suggestion of his superiority and importance. The blue of the background also links with the idea of God as the colour blue has connotations of faith and heaven. The white around Noel also suggests that he is a new and fresh artist and implies that he is on a new path in his career. Noels name is written in white and is the only white font on the page, white also has connotations of faith and purity which links to his representation as being God-like and superior. The rest of the font is in black which links with Noels dark clothing and suggests that the topic of the article is serious.
