Colour
Red connotes passion, energy, strength, desire, fire and is often used to evoke erotic feelings and is highly visible and stands out against other colours. The red used on this contents page could make the artist (Florence and the machine) look desirable, passionate, strong and the red of her hair suggests she is a fiery character and could also evoke erotic feelings and sexualise her – this will appeal to the male audience. The red is also used as the colour of the font for the subheadings which makes them stand out and draws your eye to them and the important parts of the magazine. White connotes safety, cleanliness, and goodness, fresh, new and is often a trusted colour. The use of white on the masthead will suggest to the reader that the magazine can be trusted and also contains fresh, new and upcoming stories; the use of white on the font that explains the stories will also imply these things. Black connotes mystery, elegance, power, authority and is also a thinning colour. The black of Florence’s dress suggests that she is elegant and powerful but also makes her seem mysterious – this could imply that something about her is going to be revealed in the issue.
Font
Most of the font is in capital letters which makes it stand out and seem like it is being shouted at you which grabs the reader’s attention. The size of the font of the subheadings is quite a lot bigger than that of the synopsis of the heading; this could be to not give too much away about the magazine and mainly draw the reader’s eye to the features so they will want to read the whole story. The date and issue number are the smallest piece of writing on the page as they are not very important but still need to be there.
Mise-en-scene
The masthead is placed in the top centre of the page; it is white over a grey background which really makes it stand out and keeps the brand name running through the magazine. The image of Florence is on the right hand side of the page (images are read from right to left) and the writing is on the left side of the page (writing is read from left to right) – this makes the layout easy to follow and structured. Florence’s body is being pushed outwards towards the left side of the page and the writing curves around the curve of her torso; this makes the layout of the page really soft on the eye and also suggests that she has lots of power and authority and is a main part of the magazine as she is pushing and manipulating the shape of the contents of the magazine. The camera angle is slightly low so it looks up at Florence to suggest she is powerful and important; she is also facing side on to the camera which suggests that she is hiding something as you cannot see all of her – this is intriguing and makes you want to see what she is hiding by reading the magazine. Florence is also looking to the top left corner of the page (indirect address) which again makes her seem mysterious and makes the reader wonder about her. The fact she is looking up could also suggest that she is going up in her career or that she is ‘holding her head high’ as a strong woman. A mid shot has been used again to not reveal all of her and keep the reader intrigued about her. Her representation is also very different from that of females normally in the media; she does not have much skin on show and is not dressed in very feminine colours – this could also imply that she is not your typical woman and she likes to stand out from the crowd, this is also interesting and intriguing as it is different.

Mise-en-scene
The masthead is placed in the top left corner of the page and the word ‘contents’ is placed next to this on the right hand side of the page; the date of the issue is positioned in small writing underneath this. The page has been split into 2 sections; on the right hand side of the page there is a column containing all of the contents of the magazine and on the left hand side there is a large picture (main image) of the lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys performing at a gig and then anchoring that is the information on where you can find the story and in the bottom left corner there is an advertisement to subscribe to the magazine. The splitting up of the page makes the layout really easy to follow without making the page look empty – there is barely any ‘white space’ on the page which suggests to the reader that the magazine is packed full of stories. The main image of the lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys is the only image on the page which suggests that this is the main feature of the magazine and doesn’t give too much away about the rest of the magazine; the singers face is covered and he is looking away from the camera (indirect address) which makes him seem mysterious and this intrigues the reader as they want to discover more about him. The use of buzz words such as ‘LIVE!’ ‘NEWS’ and ‘NO.1’ also attract the readers eye and intrigue and excite them about the stories inside.
Colour
Black connotes seriousness, strength, masculinity and is a bold colour that contrasts well with white. Black is mostly used in the font which makes it bold and serious but also suggests that the stories are strong and this gives the magazine a strong reputation. Black is also a colour that is associated with the alternative/rock genre so the use of black reinforces the genre of the magazine. White has connotations of cleanliness, fresh, new, safety and is a trusted colour. The use of white on this page is mostly in the background which suggests that everything about the magazine is new, fresh and up to date and also implies that the magazine is trustworthy. The use of red (mostly in the masthead) suggests that the magazine has energy, power, strength and makes it highly visible to keep the brand name running through the magazine and to evoke feelings of excitement and energy throughout the magazine to keep the reader interested and also the brightness of the red contrasts well with other colours and brightens the page up to make it more aesthetically pleasing and interesting.
Font
The majority of the font is in capital letters which makes it stand out and seem as though it is being shouted at you. Most of the font is in black which makes it bold and stad out against the white background of the pag. The masthead 'NME' is positioned in the top left hand corner of the page and the word 'CONTENTS' is written next to it in the same font to keep a link between the brand of the magazine and what is being shown inside. The masthead and word 'CONTENTS' are the biggest piece of font on the page and so obviously the most important; the subheadings are written in a medium sized font but all other font is quite small and doesn't stand out too much so as not to give too much away about the articles and ruin what is inside, keeping the reader intrigued and interested.

Colour
Red connotes passion, energy, strength and is a bright colour that contrasts with other colours on the page. This could suggest that the magazine is passionate about its topic and contains lots of strong and energetic stories that will keep the viewer interested; red also connotes excitement which intrigues the reader and makes the magazine appealing to them. The red stands out from all of the other colours on the page as it is very bright and vibrant – this makes the page more aesthetically pleasing and nice to look at. There is quite a lot of white in the background of the page: white connotes fresh, new, purity and is a trusted colour in advertising. The effect of the use of white is that it makes the page look fresh and implies to the reader that the contents of the magazine is going to be new, fresh and exciting. White is a trusted colour in advertising which will make the magazine more trusted by readers and the use of white means that the other colours (black and red) on the page stand out and contrast with one another to make the page more exciting and vibrant. The font is written in black which suggests seriousness; black is a bold colour and so the text seems to stand out from everything else and is very eye catching.
Font
Most of the font on this contents page is in capital letters to make it stand out and seem like it is being shouted at you to grab the attention of the reader. Most of the font is in black which makes it bold and stand out against the white background. Most of the font displaying what is inside the issue is in a small font so it does not clearly give too much away about what is inside and the buzz words advertising the contents are in a larger font to draw the attention of the reader in. The font is thick, bold and slightly curved around the edges which gives it an alternative and indie edge and so fits with the genre of the magazine.
Mise-en-scene
The masthead is displayed again in the left corner of the page to keep the brand name running through the magazine. The red background of the masthead has been stretched along the top of the page and ‘contents’ has been written in black to let the reader know what is on this page. In the right hand corner of the page, a small image of the front cover has been placed as a re-iteration of the edition and to help the reader find out where stories from the cover are in the magazine. The page has been split into three sections: a column containing the ‘regulars’ on the right hand side of the page, a row containing the ‘Q review’ in the bottom left side of the page and in the left/centre of the page a square containing images of the most exciting features and the page number of where you can find them. The sectioning of the page makes it easy to read and follow and enables you to go straight to the stories you want to read.
